Elena Kulichenko garnered significant attention from Russian media outlets in recent days, not solely because the 22-year-old high jumper was chosen as Cyprus’ flag bearer but mainly due to the incident involving controversial footage.
We refer to pictures depicting her in revealing poses, which the athlete attributed to another individual’s criminal action. Her brother, Vladimir, in statements published on two different websites, asserted that the photos were a product of montage using artificial intelligence and that the whole matter serves Western interests.
Vladimir is quoted as saying that this minor “scandal” also favours a rival athlete of Kulichenko’s, insinuating that it was instigated by her competitor’s country.
Nonetheless, a renowned Russian sports commentator, Dmitry Guberniev, during his commentary on the opening ceremony, described Kulichenko as “wonderful with Cyprus” and added that it was “interesting” that she was chosen as the flag bearer.
