The 33rd Olympic Games officially opens today with a historic ceremony along the River Seine, marking the first time the event will not be held in a stadium.
The route will highlight Paris’ iconic landmarks, with hundreds of heads of state in attendance, including Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.
President Christodoulides plans to visit the Olympic Village and Cypriot athletes during his time in Paris.
The ceremony will focus on the cultural and artistic significance of each location rather than a chronological history of France. More than 10,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees will participate in the parade aboard hundreds of boats, with flag bearers disembarking at the Trocadéro.
Cyprus will be represented by Milan Trajkovic, a three-time Olympian and 110m hurdler, and Elena Kulichenko, a 22-year-old high jumper making her Olympic debut.
The opening ceremony commences at 8:30 pm Cyprus time and will be broadcast live on CyBC2.
