House President calls for inquiry after MPs’ family data published

House President Annita Demetriou has called for an investigation on Wednesday into an error by parliament’s services that led to the publication of parliament members’ personal data, including information that should never have been posted online.

Demetriou asked the services to prepare a factual report on exactly what happened and to strictly follow everything the relevant legislation requires.

The error drew strong reactions from parliament members, as the sensitive data published also concerned members of their families.

The matter is expected to come up on Thursday at both the conference of party leaders in parliament and the House Institutions Committee, which is responsible for the issue.

ALMA parliament member Irene Charalambides has written to the House President and party leaders about the matter, while DISY parliament member Giorgos Pamborides has spoken of possible criminal liability.

In her letter on Wednesday, Charalambides said parliament had posted parts of the declarations that the law explicitly bars from publication, including personal data about spouses and minor children and reconciliation statements submitted to the Tax Commissioner.

She said the material remained online until late on Tuesday evening, despite a parliament announcement that the declarations had been withdrawn. She asked for a written report on how the breach happened, for everyone affected to be told which of their details had been published, for the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection to be informed, and for a written vetting protocol before any future posting.
