Cyfield, the company responsible for the widening of a portion of the road in the Akamas peninsula, has ceased works in the area today, following public outrage over the environmental effects of the project.
Cyfield Group owner, Kyriakos Chrysochos, made this announcement before the House Environmental Committee, stating that construction work is frozen from today onwards. He further added, “We responsibly declare our intention to collaborate with all parties involved to overcome the issues and complete the project without any financial claims.”
The contractor’s decision was welcomed by the members of the Committee and attendees from environmental organisations, providing an opportunity to take any necessary corrective measures, Phileleftheros reports.
The construction of a road network in Akamas received heavy criticism last week, following visits by environmentalist groups to the peninsula, reporting that construction is not following agreed protocols, leading to irreversible damage.
Speaking before the Committee, the Minister of Agriculture, Petros Xenophontos, mentioned that the President of the Republic had given clear instructions to halt the work, following the violations in Akamas. He also noted that a probe on the issue had been initiated on Monday, set to conclude by the upcoming Friday.
The Minister expressed his concern and dissatisfaction with what he had seen and heard. He stated that there would be a reassessment of the specific project and others in the sensitive area to develop a more environmentally friendly approach.
