Russian flags displayed by fans during Omonia’s Conference League match against Dynamo Kyiv have sparked condemnation in Ukrainian media and celebratory coverage in Russia.
The incident occurred during Omonia’s 2-0 victory against the Ukrainian side on Thursday at GSP Stadium in Nicosia. Russian flags appeared in the stands, whilst at least one fan wore a T-shirt bearing the letter “Z”.
The “Z” symbol has been adopted by some Russian citizens and organisations to show support for Moscow’s military operations in Ukraine since forces began marking vehicles with it during the February 2022 invasion.
Ukrainian media condemned the display as a deliberate provocation against the visiting team from a country under Russian invasion. Reports described the incident as a major talking point after the match, with some outlets calling it “provocative”.
Russian media outlets presented the event differently, framing it as a “show of support” from fans and emphasising the presence of Russian and Soviet symbols at the stadium.
Stewards removed some flags, including the Russian flag, but others remained in the stands throughout the match, according to reports.
UEFA regulations prohibit political symbols at matches. It remains unclear whether the incident will be investigated or result in sanctions against Omonia.
