Neofytou hails Demetriou’s withdrawal as boost to DISY unity

Former DISY leader Averof Neofytou has praised party leader Annita Demetriou’s decision to withdraw from the race for the party’s presidential nomination, calling it prudent and responsible and saying it strengthens the party’s unity.

In a statement on Thursday, Neofytou sent a message of unity to DISY supporters. “Together we move forward,” he said.

Demetriou announced her decision earlier on Thursday after meeting Neofytou and parliament member Giorgos Pamborides at the party’s headquarters in Nicosia.

Neofytou said that ten days ago he had backed calls from a large number of Cypriots for a national awakening to shake the country out of passivity. He said this was needed to solve the country’s major problems, give young people prospects and build a fair society.

DISY supporters were the irreplaceable core of that islandwide movement and the guardians of the party’s unity, he said. He had repeatedly said he would never hurt them.
