Anti-racism alliance demands action over attacks on delivery riders

Relevant News

The Alliance Against the Far Right, Fascism and Racism has called on the Justice Ministry, the police and other authorities to fully investigate attacks on food delivery workers and the motives of those responsible, in a statement issued on Thursday.

The alliance also urged the authorities to ensure those responsible are held to account and to take practical measures to protect delivery workers.

It condemned what it described as continuing incidents of racist violence against delivery workers. Repeated beatings, attacks and thefts targeting migrant workers caused revulsion and deep concern, the alliance said, and were not isolated incidents but a phenomenon that required a decisive response.

No one should live in fear of being attacked because of their origin, colour or religion, it said, adding that impunity sustains and strengthens racism and the far right.

Justice Minister Costas Fytiris said on Thursday that he believed most attacks on delivery riders were robberies rather than racially motivated. He has proposed that delivery platforms give riders a ‘red button’ to alert police immediately if they are attacked.
