President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday he was going into his upcoming meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman in a positive frame of mind and with a specific plan, adding that positive developments could follow if there was genuine political will.

Talking to Phileleftheros as he arrived at the first Forbes Cyprus Next Gen Banking & Fintech Summit in Limassol, Christodoulides said he would do everything he could to create positive prospects.

“I must do whatever is possible so that positive and optimistic news emerges,” he said, adding that he was approaching the meeting with considerable goodwill and on the basis of a specific plan.

He said the plan had been presented to the United Nations Secretary-General and had been warmly received by the UN. He would comment on the outcome after the meeting, he added.

Asked about Annita Demetriou’s decision to drop her bid for the Democratic Rally (DISY) nomination for the 2028 presidential election, Christodoulides said it was not for him to comment on a party leader’s decision. It was her decision and she had already explained her reasons, he said, so he had nothing further to add.
