Traffic is a daily challenge, especially during rush hours—although, in truth, there are no quiet times on the roads anymore. But what happened yesterday morning on the streets of Nicosia was unbelievable.
For hours, cars crawled along, with drivers’ stress levels soaring. From Strovolos, Engomi, Agios Dometios, and other areas, nearly all roads were impassable. After struggling through this, drivers finally reached the centre near the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, only to find the road ahead closed for a private company’s event. Even if you managed to move, reaching your destination was far from easy. Cars circled the area, navigating side streets and backroads in a desperate attempt to reach where they needed to go.
The situation triggered a strong reaction from the president of the Parliament’s Education Committee, Pavlos Mylonas, as there was a meeting in progress at the time, causing many to arrive late at the House of Representatives.
“It is inconceivable for a European state—if we truly are one—to allow any private individual to hold an event and close central roads at 8:00 in the morning”, Mylonas stated emphatically, questioning who granted permission for such a disruption.
