Police appear to have identified a person who fired a shot near Kennedy Square in central Paphos in the early hours of Thursday, and are searching for the suspect after finding a pistol in a flowerbed.
Officers went to the area after police received a report of a shot being fired at around 2am. While examining the scene, they found the pistol in a flowerbed and a cartridge case a short distance away. The scene was cordoned off, and further examinations began at first light.
Police appear to have identified the suspect from initial examinations and witness accounts, and are carrying out intensive searches to find and arrest the person.
The suspect is reportedly a Greek Cypriot who has come to police attention many times in the past. According to the same reports, people at restaurants and bars in the town centre at the time saw the suspect fire, throw the pistol into the flowerbed and leave the scene.
The motive is expected to be established once the suspect is found.
Paphos CID is investigating.
