UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, is set to arrive in Cyprus on Sunday for high-level discussions aimed at advancing the stalled peace process.
DiCarlo will first receive a briefing from the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, before meeting the island’s two leaders on Monday.
According to UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, DiCarlo will hold separate meetings with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar on February 10. Talks will focus on the way forward for the Cyprus issue, ahead of an informal expanded-format meeting.
“Additionally, Ms. DiCarlo will concentrate on the work of the Secretary-General’s good offices mission and will engage with civil society representatives, including youth and women’s groups,” Haq stated.
Following her Cyprus visit, DiCarlo will travel to Athens on February 12 and Ankara on February 13 for further discussions on Cyprus and broader regional and global developments.
Sources indicate that on Monday, she will meet Christodoulides at noon, following an earlier meeting with Tatar at 10:30 a.m. In the afternoon, she is expected to hold talks with a group of women at Ledra Palace.
Christodoulides has expressed his willingness to attend a joint meeting with DiCarlo and Tatar, should such a discussion be arranged.
