Anti-war activists in London, Akrotiri plan simultaneous protests against UK’s Cyprus bases

Relevant News

Activists announced plans for simultaneous demonstrations at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and the Ministry of Defence in London, protesting what they describe as Britain’s “colonial presence” on the island.

The simultaneous protests, scheduled for March 9, 15:30 Cyprus time, focus on the UK military base’s alleged role in the ongoing Middle East conflict and the genocide in Gaza.

Organisers have issued a list of demands, including an immediate cessation of surveillance flights over Palestine and an end to the transfer of weapons and personnel through RAF Akrotiri.

The protesters are also calling for Cyprus to request the release of surveillance footage to the International Criminal Court and to refuse military support for British and American operations at Cypriot facilities.

The demands include the expulsion of US special forces from RAF bases in Cyprus and the complete dismantling of the UK’s Sovereign Base Areas on the island.

Britain has maintained sovereign territory on Cyprus since the island gained independence in 1960, with the bases serving as strategic military outposts.
