Watchdog finds 22 petrol stations did not pass on full tax cut

Twenty-two of the 290 petrol stations checked by the Consumer Protection Service did not pass on the full cut in excise duty on heating oil that took effect on Friday, and some of them raised prices.

The check was completed at noon on Friday. At 268 stations, or 92.4 per cent, the retail price of heating oil fell by at least 6.39 cents a litre, the full amount of the cut. At the remaining 22, or 7.6 per cent, the price fell by less, stayed the same or went up.

The cut, which includes VAT, will remain in force until 30 April 2027 and is intended to lower heating costs for consumers over the winter.

The service pointed to a table listing the stations where prices stayed the same or rose compared with levels before the cut. It said it would continue to monitor fuel prices systematically, and urged consumers to check the Retail Fuel Price Observatory and compare prices before buying heating oil.
