UPDATE: Limassol wildfire spreads to two fronts; Omodos residents ready for potential evacuation

The latest information indicates that instructions have been given for Omodos residents to be ready for evacuation as a precautionary measure.

Two active fire fronts are threatening key locations in Cyprus, with one posing danger to a winery in Omodos and another moving towards the Agios Sylas industrial area, as Fire Chief Nicos Logginos heads to assess potential evacuation measures.

According to information, the fire is located above a winery in Omodos village, creating an immediate threat to the facility.

The first front covers Koilani, Mandria and Omodos areas, whilst the second front is positioned north of Agios Sylas Industrial Area and is moving parallel towards Alassa.

Logginos headed to the Agios Sylas industrial area to assess the situation and provide instructions, including potential evacuation if necessary, as a flare-up from yesterday’s major wildfire continues burning east of Arsos.

The flare-up is burning east of Arsos community, at the borders with Vasa and Koilani towards Laona hill, according to Arsos Community Development Association President Elias Ioakeim.

He noted that firefighting forces had a strong presence from early morning, describing an “impressive number of firefighting forces”. Fire sources were maintained from last night, but the fire’s spread towards the village was prevented, he said.

Ioakeim said electricity supply to the village has been cut since yesterday, but a generator was transferred there today to cover residents’ needs. Residents remain in the village without facing any danger, he added.
