Police made two arrests on Tuesday morning during the parade marking the 64th anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Cyprus. According to reports, a group of citizens attempted to display a banner across from the officials’ podium when police intervened, stating that such actions were prohibited, without providing further explanation.
The banner reportedly carried the slogan, “CYPRUS REPUBLIC: THE ONLY SOLUTION,” written in Greek, English, and Turkish, without any offensive content. The citizens involved argued that the right to free expression and protest is fundamental, leading to the two detentions.
It remains unclear whether charges have been filed against the two individuals.
