Tatar talks of Cyprus meetings but sends no official word

Relevant News

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has publicly announced plans for meetings with President Christodoulides in late January and a broader conference including guarantor powers in March, though no official communication has reached the presidential palace.

Speaking to journalists in his office, Tatar suggested a bilateral meeting would take place around January 20-21, 2025, followed by multilateral talks in Switzerland in mid-March.

He claimed the expanded meeting was his initiative and insisted the Turkish Cypriot side is not avoiding dialogue.

The timing could coincide with UN Secretary-General’s European visit in March for meetings with EU leaders and institutions. Switzerland may be chosen as the venue since Turkey rejects meetings on EU territory.

However, government spokesman Konstantinos Letympiotis said on Saturday that no official response has been received from Tatar regarding the proposed meeting.

The crossing points issue also remains unresolved, with Tatar insisting only on opening Mia Milia while rejecting Pyroi or Kokkina options.

Speaking at an online event, Tatar defended his side’s Cyprus policy as appropriate given the geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
