Customs officers detained 28,000 condoms that appear to be counterfeits of a very well-known brand in a container shipped to Cyprus from Greece on Thursday, the Customs and Excise Department said Thursday.
The container, carrying grouped goods for several consignees, was picked for X-ray scanning and a physical inspection after a risk analysis of EU sea cargo from Greece.
On first inspection, and based on the shipping documents and invoices submitted, the condoms appear to infringe the brand’s intellectual property rights, the department said.
The owner of the company concerned appears to have admitted that the condoms are counterfeit. Seizure proceedings will go ahead in the coming days, and the goods will eventually be destroyed.
The department warned the public again about the risks of counterfeit products, which it said are never made with the quality materials and processes that makers of genuine goods use. Fake condoms could lead to unwanted pregnancies and to more serious consequences such as the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, it added.
Limassol Customs is investigating the case further.
