Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides on Thursday inaugurated a new dental department at Larnaca General Hospital. It will treat both outpatients and patients already in hospital, and its dentists will be able to work with treating doctors on more complex cases.
Charalambides said the department would make it easier to deal with cases that need particular clinical attention. Being inside the hospital, dentists can take into account a patient’s condition, medication and other treatment needs, which supports safe treatment and better coordinated care, he said.
Stressing the importance of prevention, early detection and awareness, Charalambides said a newly delivered mobile dental unit would support various activities in schools and remote communities in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts. The unit complements the new department by bringing preventive care closer to people, particularly where travel is an obstacle, he said.
He said strengthening public hospitals was a standing priority of the government, and that upgrading them was “first and foremost an investment in people”.
