Polis Chrysochous demands new modern hospital to replace colonial-era facility

The Polis Chrysochous Municipality has renewed its appeal to the Ministry of Health for a new modern hospital, highlighting the inadequacy of its current colonial-era facility in meeting the region’s growing healthcare needs.

In a letter to health authorities following November consultations, municipal officials said that the existing hospital serves 30 communities with 10,000 residents, a population that more than doubles during summer months. The current facility, parts of which date back to British colonial rule, requires urgent modernisation to meet contemporary healthcare standards.

The municipality argues that with the completion of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous motorway and two new hotels in Latsi, healthcare demands will further increase. They propose including a rehabilitation unit in the new facility, noting it would be the first such public sector unit in Cyprus and could serve both local and European patients.

Officials stress that construction would take five years once approved, urging immediate action to address the growing healthcare needs of this remote region.

The proposal emphasises the community’s right to adequate medical care and suggests the area’s favorable climate would be particularly suitable for rehabilitation services.
