In a bid to exhaust all possible avenues for collaboration, the Democratic Rally (Disy) and the Democratic Party (Diko) have mutually agreed to extend the deadline, keeping the negotiation process alive.
The move aims to maintain an open dialogue, navigating challenges such as Disy’s opposition to a potential Akel-Diko partnership.
Simultaneously, pressure is mounting on the government, signalling that Disy will not support governmental bills while the major coalition party explores collaboration with the Left. While Diko appears uneasy with Pindarou, there is a reluctance to completely shut the door on cooperation with Disy.
Recent discussions hint at a potential reshuffling of alliances, exploring scenarios for collaboration among Disy, Diko, and Dipa. Key considerations include the pursuit of a common candidacy for the municipalities of Nicosia and Limassol. If successful, this collaboration could extend to municipalities of significant importance. However, several factors must align for this scenario to materialise.
Foremost, a mutually acceptable candidate must be identified for Nicosia and Limassol. This rules out support for candidates like Andreas Constantinou, Nicos Nicolaides and Yiannis Armeftis, respectively. Challenges include reactions from Diko and Dipa against specific candidates, necessitating careful navigation.
Noteworthy is the absence of contention in Paphos, where Diko is unlikely to support the incumbent’s Phedon Phedonos candidacy.
Larnaca also presents limited cooperation opportunities, with both Diko and Dipa expected to endorse Andreas Vyras. Rumours resurface regarding former Interior Minister Nikos Nouris for Nicosia, while various scenarios are under consideration for Limassol.
Challenge lies in managing potential splits
In Limassol, both Nicos Nicolaides and Yiannis Armeftis have officially announced their intention to run. Scenarios involving the distribution of deputy mayoralties are also being discussed.
The political landscape experienced a delay yesterday with the postponement of the scheduled Disy political bureau meeting. This meeting, originally set to make decisions regarding local government election candidates, was deferred amid rumours that Diko had requested additional time after the last meeting between the party leaders last Friday. The Diko Secretariat convened for an extended session yesterday, discussing various scenarios and reviewing the available data. Reports indicate that the door to cooperation remains open, both with Disy and Akel.
A crucial meeting between the leadership of Disy and Dipa took place yesterday morning, where the intentions of both parties for collaboration were essentially confirmed. The candidacy of Christos Tsingis seems to have secured the case for the Strovolos municipality after he officially announced his candidacy yesterday.
In a separate development, Dr Stavros Hadjiiyiannis declared his candidacy for the mayoralty of the Municipality of South Nicosia-Idalion yesterday.
Hadjiyiannis, currently a Municipal Councilor in the Municipality of Idalion, highlighted his commitment to exploiting the possibilities offered by the reform of local government.
