Pallouriotissa reed bed to be sprayed for mosquitoes on Tuesday

Nicosia Municipality will spray a reed bed in Pallouriotissa on Tuesday as part of intensified efforts to tackle mosquito breeding sites across the capital.

The operation will begin at the end of Council of Europe Street and continue along the reed bed, the municipality said.

A drone will be used for the spraying, following earlier plans announced by the municipality to deploy the technology at mosquito breeding sites, including the “Kateva” canal in Pallouriotissa.

The operation is part of a wider programme of targeted measures against mosquito breeding sites and comes as spraying and inspections continue at various locations across Nicosia.

Municipal crews have been spraying daily, including at weekends, using approved products in areas where breeding sites have been identified or residents have submitted complaints.

Recent interventions have focused on Engomi, including the Klimos watercourse from the Lakatamia boundary to Agios Dometios, areas near the cemetery and State Fair, and the open canal along Iroon Street.

Checks have also been carried out along the Klimos pedestrian route and around 28th October Avenue. Municipal services systematically inspect potential breeding sites including abandoned swimming pools, lift shafts, open canals and other places where water may remain.

The municipality has said that about 60% of complaints investigated involve a mosquito breeding site either at the complainant’s home or at a neighbouring property.

Residents are being asked to regularly check gardens and outdoor areas and remove standing water from containers, plant saucers, watering troughs, gutters, abandoned pools and other locations where mosquitoes can breed.
