Cronos gas field to start production by mid-2028, Christodoulides says

Natural gas production from Cyprus’s Cronos field is expected to begin in the first half of 2028, President Nikos Christodoulides told the Associated Press. The field will give the European Union an additional source of supply and strengthen its energy autonomy, he said.

The agreements signed with Eni to develop the field unlock investment commitments worth billions of euros and set out the steps towards production, Christodoulides said. At its peak, production is estimated to reach 500 million cubic feet of gas a day, or 14.16 million cubic metres.

He highlighted the importance for the EU of developing a field in a member state in cooperation with countries in the region, saying Cyprus is part of the energy equation. “This is the first step in a path that is bright,” he said.

Cronos lies about 185 kilometres southwest of Cyprus and holds an estimated 3 trillion cubic feet of gas, AP reported. The gas will be piped to Egypt’s Damietta facility, where it will be liquefied and exported, mainly to Europe.
