The Legal Service has ruled out any wrongdoing on the part of independent and former Elam MP Andreas Themistocleous concerning an official complaint made by fellow MP Alexandra Attalidou over alleged abusive remarks.
It should be recalled that on June 2, 2023, Attalidou filed a complaint against Themistocleous regarding the posts he shared on social media against his colleague, alleging that his references promoted racism.
Following a plenary session in May which voted to criminalise conversion therapies aimed at changing one’s sexual orientation or gender expression, Themistocleous who opposed the legislation, wrote on Facebook, referring to Attalidou: “It seems the three blacks never showed up.”
The Cybercrime Subdivision conducted a thorough investigation into the case by collecting materials and posts. On June 5, the case was forwarded to the Legal Service for guidance on how to proceed.
On August 21, 2023, the case was returned to the Police with instructions to archive it, as the Legal Service’s decision found no evidence of any criminal offence.
Themistokleou’s remarks were condemned by the House Special Committee on Ethics in June, which noted that it “contained offensive, sexist, racist, and derogatory content that undermines, among other things, the dignity of the particular female Member of Parliament”.
