Two men arrested by police in connection with an attack against a leftist association in Lakatamia, have been released after a court was not convinced by the evidence presented against them.

The two suspects appeared before a court following their arrest by an investigator from Nicosia CID. However, the court ruled that there was insufficient evidence to suggest their involvement in the alleged incidents and ordered their release.

The released individuals had reportedly provided an alibi, stating they were elsewhere at the time of the disturbances, a claim that police had not yet investigated. This lack of investigation was reportedly a factor in the court’s decision to release them.

On May 18, a group of approximately 50 masked individuals armed with various weapons stormed a leftist association house affiliated with FC Omonia in Lakatamia, injuring three people and causing extensive property damage, according to police reports.

The attack occurred around 10:30 p.m., shortly after the conclusion of a football match between rival teams Omonia and APOEL. The assailants inflicted injuries on two men, aged 30 and 33, and a 68-year-old woman who manages the establishment. All three victims received medical treatment and were later discharged from the hospital.
