Police are expanding their investigation into the escape of a 49-year-old Swedish national from a Larnaca clinic, with a 54-year-old lawyer and a 44-year-old police officer remaining in custody.
Investigators from the police headquarters’ criminal investigation department are working to build a case for the criminal court while probing potential involvement of additional suspects in the escape plot. Police sources say they are examining connections within both the officer’s and lawyer’s circles.
About 40 statements are still pending, with authorities seeking assistance from Interpol and Europol, particularly regarding the financial transactions of the suspect, who was wanted in Sweden for alleged fraud worth €90 million.
Police discovered incriminating evidence on the suspects’ mobile phones and are seeking access to their banking records.
Court proceedings revealed that €5,000 was transferred to the lawyer from the fugitive’s son, and a luxury vehicle worth €75,000, purchased by the Swedish national last August, was transferred to her name. Text messages indicate the suspect had given the lawyer an additional €10,000.
The police officer allegedly purchased SIM cards for the Swedish national’s phone and used his credit card to buy trainers used in the escape. Evidence suggests he was acting under instructions from the lawyer, who allegedly supplied the fugitive with a mobile phone, chargers, trainers, handcuff keys, and an escape route map.
Police confirmed in court the Swedish national’s claim that his lawyer proposed marriage to him. The suspect stated she brought a plainclothes priest to the clinic for a wedding ceremony, which he refused.
The lawyer reportedly told police after her arrest that there had been flirtation between them and claimed he had proposed marriage to establish ties with the Republic.
