A recent online poll conducted by the platform “Voice of the Citizen” has unveiled a significant dissent among the public regarding the proposed reduction of the voting age limit for electoral participation to 17 or 16 years old.
Presenting the findings at a press conference held at the Presidential Palace, Citizen Commissioner Panagiotis Palates disclosed that 59.5% of respondents voiced their disagreement with lowering the voting age, while 40.5% expressed support for the proposition.
The overwhelming majority of participants, comprising 87.7%, indicated a preference for setting the age limit at 17 years old if a reduction were to be implemented.
Conversely, only 12.3% favoured lowering the age limit to 16 years old.
A total of 1,229 individuals took part in the poll, with 830 men and 406 women contributing their opinions. Age demographics ranged from 17 to 88 years old.
Commissioner Palates further revealed plans for quarterly polls, with the upcoming one slated to address governmental measures concerning accuracy, public orientation preferences, and stance on specific policies.
Additionally, he highlighted other initiatives of the Office, including proposed legislation aimed at fostering greater political involvement in policy-making through the collection of signatures. The Commissioner also mentioned the establishment of a consultation mechanism with the Cyprus Children’s Council.
