The second phase of the Limassol–Saittas road is waiting on environmental approval, expected in late 2026 or early 2027, Transport Minister Evi Tsolaki told parliament’s Transport Committee on Thursday.
If approval is granted, the Public Works Department expects to put the project out to tender before mid-2027. No start date for construction has been set.
Phase A2 covers the Palodia–Alassa–Monagri section. Part of the proposed route passes through an area in the EU’s Natura 2000 network of protected sites, and the next steps depend on an assessment by the Department of Environment.
Tsolaki said the ministry was waiting for the department’s views. She said the project’s feasibility study had already been completed and no new one was needed, and that the delays were down to the studies required, not to a lack of political decision.
“The political will is for the project to go ahead,” she told the committee, adding that huge efforts were being made.
The Public Works Department said the expropriation plans had been prepared so that the project could move forward as soon as environmental approval was secured.
Road safety
Parliament members and representatives of the bodies involved stressed the need for the project to go ahead, citing its importance for Limassol and especially for the district’s mountain communities. They said the road section was crucial for improving road safety and travel conditions, and for the viability of the mountain areas.
The community leader of Pelendri told the committee that nine people from the village had already been killed on that section of the road.
The item was put on the committee’s agenda by parliament members Prodromos Alambritis, Andreas Pasiourtides, Panikkos Xiouroupas, Adamos Aspris, Chrysanthos Savvides, Andreas Apostolou and Sotiris Ioannou.
