One of the two major projects set to significantly transform the city centre of Larnaca is now in motion.
The Municipal Council of Larnaca has announced a tender for the selection of a contractor for the project titled “Redevelopment of Acropolis and Alkis Square and surrounding streets” (Competition No. 62/2023).
The project aims to improve and reconstruct existing roads by removing asphalt layers and replacing them with cobblestones.
It will also widen sidewalks, upgrade the rainwater drainage system, enhance and underground public utility infrastructure and networks, and increase green areas. The project will also involve the installation of water features and modern urban equipment.
This project is a continuation of the “Street Redevelopment and Easy Access for People with Disabilities – Phase B” project, with the tender for the next phase set to be announced shortly.
According to the Municipality of Larnaca, the two projects will address critical issues related to the safe and smooth movement of pedestrians and vehicles, with a particular focus on providing facilities for people with disabilities.
Additionally, the projects aim to aesthetically, functionally, and qualitatively upgrade the area.
As per the project’s design, the following streets will be cobblestoned as part of the square redevelopment: Louki Akrita, Orfeos Gladstonos (a section of it), Ermou (a section of it), Konstantinou Kalogera (a section of it), and Gregori Afxentiou Avenue (a section of it).
The project’s design was developed by the A. F. Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers.
The project is expected to commence in early 2024, have a duration of 18 months, and cost €3.1 million plus VAT. It is part of the “THALEIA 2021-2027” Cohesion Policy Programme, co-financed by the European Union.
