Hackers attempted a cyberattack on the Government Portal today, but the effort was successfully thwarted, according to a statement from the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy.
The ministry announced that there had been an attempt to disrupt the availability of government websites. “The attack aimed solely at the availability of the state’s informational websites,” the statement read, adding that swift and coordinated actions from involved agencies successfully neutralized the threat.
Only the main portal, gov.cy, was affected for a few minutes, but none of the individual websites linked to the portal or other state online services were impacted, the ministry confirmed. “All online services and websites of Ministries, Deputy Ministries, and other governmental services remained fully accessible.”
The ministry identified the attack as a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack, which seeks to render websites inaccessible. It further emphasized that no security breaches occurred during the incident.
Reassuring the public, the ministry stated that “government services remain on high alert” in the face of continued cyber threats. This marks the sixth cyberattack targeting Cyprus in the past three days.
