Dog found in Paphos bin recovering; owner says dog was lost 1.5 year ago

A dog found wrapped in bags inside a rubbish bin in Peyia is now able to walk and eat normally, the Cyprus Animal Party announced on Monday.

The party said in a statement that the dog “is responding to its environment, eating normally and today (20/1/2025) began walking”.

Police have released the first suspect who was initially detained for one day under a court order in connection with dumping the live dog in the bin. A second suspect has been arrested and is being questioned, according to Paphos police.

The investigation is awaiting DNA test results from feed bags to potentially link evidence to either the first or second suspect before proceeding with legal action, authorities said.

The first suspect claimed to have lost the dog a year and a half ago but failed to report it to police as required by law. Police will summon him later to face charges for non-compliance with this legal requirement.

The case continues to be investigated by Paphos animal police and police headquarters.
