A 30-year-old man has been arrested after his dog was discovered sealed in multiple bin bags and dumped in a waste container in Pegeia, Paphos, police said.

The dog, an 11-year-old male named Eddie, was found by a volunteer who heard barking coming from a dumpster on Thursday evening.

The animal was discovered sealed inside three bags, with its head twisted to fit inside, according to animal welfare organisation Simba Animal Aid.

“The suspect had sealed the dog in three bags using glue”, said Nicoletta Tyrimou, spokesperson for the Police Animal Protection Unit. The dog was identified through its microchip, leading to the owner’s arrest.

Eddie is currently receiving treatment at a veterinary clinic in critical condition, suffering from malnutrition and a stroke likely caused by the trauma. The dog is unable to stand but has begun eating small amounts, according to the Friends of Pegeia Dog Pound.

Environmental and Animal Welfare Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou called the incident “tragic” and demanded a swift investigation.

Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou described the act as “inhumane” and called for stricter penalties for animal abuse.

Police are investigating the owner’s properties for potential evidence of other abused animals.
