A dog was rescued from a waste bin in Pegeia after being found sealed alive inside three garbage bags, prompting a police investigation into animal cruelty.

The animal was discovered on Thursday afternoon when passers-by heard barking coming from a rubbish bin. A member of a local animal welfare organisation found the dog trapped inside multiple bags that had been sealed with glue.

The dog, which was found to be malnourished and later suffered a stroke believed to be caused by the trauma, is currently receiving treatment at a veterinary clinic in Paphos. The animal has been identified through its microchip number.

Animal welfare volunteers have reported the incident to Police and the Veterinary Services. They have also appealed to Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou to intervene in the investigation.

Rescuers reported that the large-sized dog appeared to have been physically manipulated to fit inside the bags, potentially causing additional trauma to the animal.

The incident, which has sparked outrage on social media, has been described by the complainant as potentially the worst instance of animal abuse they have encountered.

The case has been formally documented with local authorities, who are now seeking to identify those responsible for the act of animal cruelty.
