Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades announced on Wednesday the appointment of a three-member committee to investigate procedures around used vehicle recalls, following a new incident involving a Takata airbag deployment.
The decision, approved by the Council of Ministers, comes after an airbag explosion three months ago sent fragments through a vehicle’s roof during a collision, the minister said.
“We cannot issue a decree restricting administrative charges by distributors for airbag replacements due to legislative limitations”, Vafeades told reporters after the cabinet meeting, urging dealers to avoid imposing additional costs on vehicle owners.
The minister confirmed that Honda Cyprus has secured replacement airbags, while Toyota Cyprus expects to receive 9,000 units. However, he noted that dealers face challenges with staffing and facilities for installations.
“The replacement rate is expected to increase significantly once new parts arrive,” Vafeades said, adding that the investigation committee’s terms of reference will be announced next weekend.
