Cyprus recorded its first influenza A death of the season on Tuesday after a 43-year-old man died in intensive care at Nicosia General Hospital.
Five other patients are currently in intensive care units across Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca hospitals due to flu and other seasonal infections, while medical, pulmonary and paediatric wards are operating at overcapacity.
“Unfortunately, we have had our first flu death this year,” said Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO). “The number of hospitalised patients continues to rise during this period, and we certainly expect this trend to continue.”
The cases primarily involve influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with approximately 30-35 COVID-19 patients also requiring daily hospital care.
