Police are investigating a doctor contracted with the national health system (GHS) over allegations of fraudulent claims, following a complaint by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), authorities said.
The Criminal Investigation Department in Nicosia is examining claims that the specialist doctor submitted false entries into the system for services that were never provided to GHS beneficiaries, according to police sources.
The investigation emerged from mass audits conducted by HIO across different medical specialties and service provider categories.
“When serious violations are detected, contracts may be suspended or terminated, or cases are referred to police”, an HIO official told philenews, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.
The case highlights growing concerns over healthcare fraud in Cyprus. In September, HIO imposed fines totalling €49,100 on 51 healthcare providers, including doctors and pharmacists.
The largest single fine of €30,000 was levied against a dermatologist for submitting incorrect or unjustified claims.
Additionally, 47 personal doctors were fined a total of €16,500 for excessive physiotherapy referrals and over-prescription of medications.
Last summer, authorities took action against three hospitals, seven doctors, a dentist, and a pharmacist for various violations of the national health system regulations.
If criminal charges are substantiated, the case will be filed with the Nicosia District Court, officials said.
