Cyprus bakes under prolonged heatwave that may reach 44°C

Relevant News

Cyprus is already feeling the effects of what is set to be a prolonged heatwave that began on Monday and is expected to peak between 24-27 July, with maximum temperatures forecast to reach 42-44°C, the Department of Meteorology announced.

The heatwave affects Cyprus and the broader Balkans region, with the island already under the influence of exceptionally high temperatures since Monday. In mountainous areas, maximum temperatures will range between 32-35°C during the peak period.

The phenomenon is expected to reach its climax between Thursday 24 July and Sunday 27 July, particularly affecting inland and mountainous regions. A possible retreat of the heatwave is anticipated on Tuesday 29 July.

Maximum temperatures of 42-44°C will be recorded from Thursday 24 July through Sunday 27 July in inland areas, whilst higher mountainous regions will experience temperatures between 32-35°C, with the peak occurring on Thursday 24 July. Minimum temperatures will also be significantly higher than normal during this period.

According to the announcement, the extreme weather results from intense transport of warm air masses from North Africa towards the central and eastern Mediterranean, combined with anticyclonic conditions preventing weather changes. High humidity levels, combined with extremely high temperatures, increase the risk of heat stress among the population.

The Department of Meteorology stated it will continuously monitor the phenomenon’s development. Warnings will be immediately available to the public via the department’s website and social media platforms on X and Facebook.

The department urged the public to monitor daily forecasts and announcements, noting that timely information and preventive protective measures are critical.
