The Cyprus Peace Council has called for an anti-war demonstration outside the British military base at Akrotiri on Sunday, citing concerns over the war in the Middle East and Western involvement in it.
The protest, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on 29 September, comes amidst Israel’s deadly air strikes in Lebanon and ongoing military exercises near the base.
Organisers expressed alarm over recent Israeli attacks in Palestine and Lebanon, which they claim are pushing the region towards “a generalised war with unpredictable consequences for humanity”.
The group accused the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union of supporting what they termed “Israeli aggression”.
Concerns were also raised about Cyprus potentially becoming a target due to increased US military presence on the island and recent military exercises around Akrotiri.
The Peace Council demanded an end to regional conflicts and called on the Cypriot government to oppose military activities at the British bases.
The group held another anti-war protest in Akrotiri in January.
