COVID-19 hospitalisations rise

Cypriot health officials are keeping a close watch on a recent rise in COVID-19 hospitalisations, with the Ministry of Health and scientists analysing data as the virus circulates.

Over the past two weeks (ending July 20), 64 individuals were admitted to state hospitals with COVID-19, mirroring figures from the previous week. As of yesterday, roughly 50 patients remained hospitalised, though this number fluctuates.

Hospitalisations began trending upwards in early May, peaking in the first week of July with 67 patients, two of whom required intensive care.

The island nation also saw a 22% week-on-week increase in new cases last week, with a gradual rise in positivity rates. Data up to July 14 showed the highest positivity rate among the elderly (85+), followed by the 80-84 age group.

While the most significant week-on-week jumps occurred in younger demographics (0-3 and 12-18 year olds), the most cases overall from July 8 to 14 were recorded in 35-39 and 55-59 year olds, primarily in Nicosia.

The Ministry of Health maintains the current situation is manageable for the healthcare system and reflects an expected rise in cases not unique to Cyprus. No immediate concerns have been voiced by authorities.
