The Nicosia Permanent Criminal Court temporarily adjourned proceedings on Thursday to decide on a prosecution request for the confiscation of 19,694 euros from Shimon Mistriel Aykut, who had previously pleaded guilty to usurping Greek Cypriot property.
The court paused the sentencing hearing, which began shortly after 11:00 a.m., to consider the request from senior Republic counsel Andreas Aristeidis for a confiscation order concerning funds frozen in Aykut’s Bank of Cyprus account in July 2024.
Maria Neofytou, one of Aykut’s lawyers, raised no objection to the prosecution’s request and suggested that her client’s acceptance should be considered a mitigating factor in sentencing.
Following these submissions, presiding judge Christiana Parpotta adjourned the proceedings to allow the three-judge panel to deliberate on the confiscation request.
The small courtroom was filled to capacity, with Aykut’s wife and close associates in attendance. As police officers escorted Aykut into the courtroom, he warmly greeted one of the attendees with a gesture.
