A British man, 45, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison by the Paphos Criminal Court for causing the death of a moped rider in a hit-and-run collision.
The court found the man guilty of manslaughter in the death of Ioannis Polykarpou, 58, following an incident in the early hours of 21 January. The charge was reduced from an initial indictment of premeditated murder.
The convicted man, who had been in custody since his arrest, pleaded guilty to the amended charge. He will serve his sentence in the Central Prisons.
Polykarpou suffered fatal injuries when his small-displacement motorcycle was struck by the British man’s vehicle on Tombs of the Kings Avenue. The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities.
Police investigations uncovered that the victim and the perpetrator had been involved in an altercation at a nightclub shortly before the incident occurred.
