New measures for combatting organised crime and football violence will be ready this weekend, philenews reported on Friday.
The package of measures, developed under the supervision of the Chief of Police, includes city foot patrols, an independent police information service, and enhanced control and surveillance of suspects. Regarding football violence, the measures will focus on rigorous entrance checks and supervision of fan clubs.
Marios Hartsiotis, the new Minister of Justice said that any shortcomings in implementation will lead to immediate changes. Those unable to gather information about crimes will be promptly replaced, he added.
Addressing the need for changes to enhance the operational readiness of the Police, the Minister of Justice mentioned that this matter is under study, and the results will be presented accordingly.
The recent serious criminal actions, such as the murders of Alexis Mavromichalis, Thanasis Kalogeropoulos and the bombing attacks against public prosecutors in Paphos, have raised concern in the government.
Regarding an invitation to meet from the Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, Hartsiotis stated that he had discussed the matter with the Police Chief and is expected to see both the Chief of Police and the Mayor of Paphos in the coming days.
Government Spokesperson Constantinos Letymbiotis expressed determination to put an end to this phenomenon, stating that “our citizens must and can feel safe.” It is not excluded that at some point, the President of the Republic may convene a meeting at the Presidential Palace on criminality.
