Authorities in Cyprus are intensifying their search for convicted murderer Doros Theofanous, who escaped custody during a visit to his family’s home in Choletria.
The fugitive, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011 for the premeditated murder of his pregnant partner and the manslaughter of her 3-year-old daughter, remains at large since his escape on Thursday.
The Cypriot Police are working closely with other agencies, including those in the Turkish-occupied northern areas of the island, to track his movements. According to sources from the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), communication with the Turkish Cypriot side was established “through existing channels” to alert them in case Theofanous attempts to cross into the occupied territories, possibly to flee abroad.
The escape occurred while Theofanous was on a scheduled visit to relatives, during which he managed to evade the attention of the special police units guarding him.
The search continues as authorities remain vigilant for any potential leads that could aid in his capture.
In 2011, the Permanent Court of Cassation had imposed on Doros Theofanous a life sentence for the premeditated murder of his pregnant partner, Yulia Oporok, 24, and 35 years imprisonment on the charge of manslaughter for the murder of her 3-year-old daughter Victoria, which are consecutive sentences.
