A delegation from the Department of Environment will conduct an inspection tour of the Akamas Peninsula today, accompanied by municipal authorities and other relevant stakeholders, amid growing concerns over delayed development projects.
Akamas Mayor Marinos Lambrou confirmed that the visit will include discussions with Environment Department Director Dr Theodulos Mesimeris regarding the progress of the National Forest Park project, which has faced significant implementation delays.
“The inspection tour will examine various issues, including the two kiosks that were operating illegally,” said Lambrou, referring to establishments that have recently been at the centre of disputes between government agencies and environmental organisations.
The mayor emphasised the importance the local authority and community place on resolving the prolonged delays affecting the implementation of this major development project. “We need to know when and how the work will proceed,” Lambrou stated.
According to the mayor, the 14-month delay has primarily affected the Municipality of Akamas, within whose boundaries the peninsula lies, creating significant problems not only for visitors but also for local authorities and residents.
