Summer in Cyprus: A season for beaches and bugs

Relevant News

People in Cyprus face a trio of summer viruses, warns Dr Panagiotis Demosthenous, a pathologist and General Healthcare System (GHS) personal physician.

The culprits:

  • Acute viral pharyngitis: This virus starts with a general feeling of being unwell (malaise), headache, fatigue, and stomach ache. Within 48 hours, expect fever, sore throat, and sometimes hoarseness. Treatment includes plenty of fluids, fever reducers (antipyretics), and voice rest. Seek medical advice if the fever worsens after three days.
  • Acute viral gastroenteritis: This one starts with weakness and general abdominal pain, followed by nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Not everyone experiences all symptoms. Treatment involves rehydration, but avoid plain water as it’s difficult to digest. Opt for soda, iced tea, diluted apple juice, and electrolyte solutions. Stick to bland foods like toast, rice, and chicken; avoid dairy and salads.
  • COVID-19: We’re still in the pandemic, and cases rise again this summer. Expect initial mild symptoms like fatigue, loss of appetite, and exhaustion. These can progress to a cough and headache that linger. It’s crucial to address this with fluids, fever reducers, and contact your doctor. For vulnerable groups, new antiviral medications show promise. Early treatment is key.

Vulnerability and prevention:

Exposure doesn’t guarantee illness, Dr Demosthenous says. It depends on the viral load, exposure duration, and your immune system’s strength. Catching one virus early in summer can weaken your defences and make you susceptible to another.

“Don’t dismiss symptoms as nothing serious,” Dr Demosthenous emphasises. “Acknowledge the possibility of a summer virus and seek medical advice if needed.”

Air conditioning and viruses:

Contrary to popular belief, air conditioning itself doesn’t cause illness. The issue is rapid temperature changes.

“Sudden temperature drops constrict blood vessels in the nose and throat,” Dr Demosthenous explains. “This reduces immune cells that fight viruses, especially if you’ve already been exposed.”

Beyond basic hygiene:

Here are some additional tips to avoid summer viruses:

  • Board airplanes later: This minimises inhaling viruses left behind by departing passengers. Air filtration systems also start upon takeoff, reducing airborne viruses.
  • Stay hydrated at the beach: Dehydration weakens your immune system.
  • Limit time in air-conditioned spaces: Constant air circulation in crowded places like shops can recycle viruses, especially when air filtration systems are inadequate.
  • Avoid midday takeout: High temperatures during delivery can spoil food, particularly sauces. Pack lunch to avoid both gastroenteritis and heatstroke for delivery personnel.
  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly.

Summer viruses are a reality. Take precautions to strengthen your immune system and enjoy a healthy summer. If symptoms persist, especially a worsening fever after three days, consult your doctor.
