Israeli strike blocks Lebanon-Syria border crossing, disrupts refugee flow

An Israeli strike near the Masnaa border crossing between Lebanon and Syria this morning has blocked a crucial road used by hundreds of thousands of people fleeing Israeli bombardments, according to Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamie.

Hamie stated that the strike targeted an area within Lebanese territory near the border crossing, creating a four-metre crater. This action has significantly impacted the movement of refugees seeking safety from the ongoing conflict.

The incident comes a day after an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson accused the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah of using the crossing to transport military equipment from Syria to Lebanon.

“The IDF will not allow the smuggling of these weapons and will not hesitate to act if forced to, as they have done throughout this war,” Avichay Adraee explained on X.

Hamie had previously emphasised in a press conference that Lebanese authorities are responsible for managing the Masnaa crossing.

According to Lebanese government data, more than 300,000 people, mostly Syrians, have passed from Lebanon into Syria over the past 10 days to escape intensifying Israeli bombardments.
