Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine at a meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing the need for long-term security guarantees to prevent a resurgence of war.

In a joint statement, the ministers condemned Russia’s ongoing military aggression, underscoring their commitment to assisting Ukraine in achieving “a sustainable peace and a strong, prosperous future.”

The meeting brought together top diplomats from the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Italy, along with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibikha.

For three years, Ukraine has fought back against Russian forces with Western military and financial support. The G7 countries have backed Kyiv through direct aid and by leveraging frozen Russian assets.

On Saturday, the ministers did not rule out additional sanctions against Moscow. “Any new sanctions beyond February should be contingent on whether the Russian Federation makes genuine, good-faith efforts to bring a definitive end to the war, ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security and stability as a sovereign and independent nation,” the statement said.

Beyond Ukraine, the G7 also called for lasting peace in the Middle East, welcoming a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas that includes the release of hostages held in Gaza. The ministers urged an increase in humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged Palestinian enclave.
