Foreign ministry issues urgent exit order for Cypriots in Iran amid protest crackdown

Relevant News

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a security alert, advising all Cypriot nationals to depart Iran immediately.

The travel directive, which came into effect on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, explicitly warns against all travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran. Citing a volatile internal security situation and the heightened risk of a broader regional conflict, the ministry urged those currently in the country to secure passage on remaining commercial flights while they are still operational.

Security recommendations for citizens

Cypriot nationals who remain in Iran are advised to exercise maximum vigilance and implement stringent personal security measures. The ministry’s guidance includes:

  • Avoidance of gatherings: Citizens are warned to stay away from all demonstrations and large public assemblies.
  • Information monitoring: Residents should closely follow international and local news media for real-time developments.
  • Emergency registration: All citizens are encouraged to register their presence via the Connect2CY online platform to facilitate communication with consular authorities.

Emergency contact information

In the event of an emergency, the Republic has provided direct lines of communication for its citizens both in Tehran and Nicosia:

Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Tehran

  • Address: No. 9, Mahmoud Razi St., Zaferanieh, Tehran.
  • Telephone: (+)98 212 217 99 13

  • Crisis Management Unit: +357 22 801000

The directive follows similar “leave now” orders from several European Union partners, as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the standing confrontation between Tehran and regional adversaries remain deadlocked.
