British woman found dead in suitcase entered Greece via Cyprus, police say

Greek police have identified the woman found dead inside a suitcase in Kypseli as a 38-year-old British national, identified by the initials E.R., opening a new line of inquiry into her final movements.

Investigators established that the woman had entered Greece via Cyprus in the recent period, according to police, giving the case a starting point to map her last movements and any contacts she may have had.

The Hellenic Police identified the body found in the suitcase as belonging to a British woman born in February 1988, after Interpol’s Washington office sent Greek police an official document confirming her identity.

Investigators now plan to check whether the woman was travelling with anyone on the day of her journey, information that will come from the airline, according to police. They will also examine whether any hotel bookings or house rentals were made in the greater Athens area during the period after her arrival.

Greek Police are expected to also approach Cyprus Police, who are likely to gather information useful to the investigation, according to the report. The woman may have been living in the United States, since her biometric data had been logged in a database there, according to the Interpol document sent from Washington to Greek police.

How she was identified

After the body was found, Greek authorities took fingerprints but found no match in the Greek database, police said. A sweatshirt from a French university that she was wearing proved a critical clue, and all available information was circulated internationally to police forces and Interpol, as officers from the Department for the Investigation of Organised Crime increasingly considered the possibility that the woman was not Greek.

The case was resolved on Monday night, when the US branch of Interpol confirmed her identity as a 38-year-old British woman with the initials E.R.
