Union warns against strikebreaking as concrete dispute deepens

Fears of potential clashes at concrete manufacturing plants have emerged after the Ready-Mixed Concrete Manufacturers Association refused to sign a new collective agreement yesterday, despite initially accepting the labour minister’s mediation proposal.

Trade union SEK issued a stern warning on X against any strikebreaking attempts, stating that “any attempt at strikebreaking, regardless of source, will be considered hostile action against workers and will be dealt with accordingly”.

The warning comes amid reports that government officials had assured employers that state measures would be implemented Monday to allow willing workers to resume concrete production, with police support promised at plants where non-unionised workers form the majority.

The manufacturers’ association has referred the agreement to their legal advisers, requesting a delay in implementing new overtime arrangements. Union representatives warn that any state support for strikebreaking activities would be seen as unacceptable bias towards employers and would trigger worker protests with union backing.

In a joint statement, the PEO, SEK, and DEOK construction unions announced they had accepted the labour minister’s mediation proposal but condemned employers for attempting to “mislead public opinion” about their acceptance of the deal.

The unions confirmed that strike action will continue until employers accept and sign the minister’s proposal as presented.
