Nicosia has unveiled plans aimed at transforming the city into a ’15-minute city’ by 2030, officials announced on Monday.
The plan, which covers the wider urban area of Nicosia, seeks to ensure residents can access most daily necessities within a 15-minute walk or cycle from their homes. It includes significant measures to promote public transport, manage parking and expand cycling infrastructure.
The plan outlines interventions in commercial and historical centres across Nicosia and neighbouring municipalities, including Lakatamia, Agioi Omologites, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia, and Strovolos.
A key proposal involves reducing speed limits to 30 km/h in several areas, including the Nicosia city centre and historical cores. This measure aims to curb current speeds of up to 70 km/h on main roads, which officials say discourage walking and cycling.

The plan also incorporates nine major developments set for completion before 2030, including:
- Renovation of the old GSP stadium
- Mixed-use “Landmark” development
- New Archaeological Museum
- “JUMBO” hypermarket in Strovolos
- New government buildings for multiple ministries
- Development of land owned by Kykkos Monastery
- New Land Registry buildings
- New State Laboratory
- Multi-storey mixed development by IT company Logicom
These projects are designed to improve access to work, education, shopping, and services while promoting sustainable mobility. They include provisions for public green spaces, community facilities, and integration with public transport systems.
